I am a social worker with a deep passion to help mothers with children with medically complex conditions gain strength, support and resources to be the best parent they can be. Becoming a Certified Mentor Coach has helped me blend my knowledge and experience working with families to help individuals take action steps toward creating the nurturing and supportive family that they desire. Through my private practice I love coaching parents through all types of transitions and helping you tackle obstacles that arise. Together, we work to reduce the isolation you may feel and gain the support and sense of community that you seek.

As a clinical social worker, my background includes twenty seven years of professional experience working with moms and dads who have children with special needs. Issues that parents and I have talked about over the years include managing stress, feelings of grief and loss associated with having a child with a complex medical condition or developmental delay and helping parents transition into parenthood.

I have also worked with people experiencing chronic pain and illness. In addition to my private practice, I am also a consultant to the Illinois Early Intervention System and other agencies and have started a number of support groups for parents.

Currently, I am forming a support community which is based over the telephone for mothers with medically complex children. We meet weekly to discuss issues you face in your day to day life as a parent of a child with special needs. Discussions include issues related to discipline, getting what you need from your health care professionals and sharing tips and solutions.

I want to offer you a place to come to connect with other mothers who understand what you are going through. Everyone has strengths. My goal is to help you use your strengths to feel more satisfied and experience the joys of parenting.

My background encompasses over 25 years of experience working with children and parents, inlcuding as a School Social Worker, Parent Educator, Youth Director, community volunteer, and parent. Through this work, I have many years of experience working with children who have special needs and their parents.

My interests include coaching parents who desire more balance and support in their lives, whatever the age of abilities of their children. I am also very passionate about facilitation of comprehensive sexuality education in progressive faith communities in order to celebrate and care for sexuality in healthy, life-giving ways.

I believe that faith communities that teach comprehensive sexuality education are changing the world by enabling healthy decision-making skills in young people. This opens up conversations between parents and children around sexuality and values, and viewing our sexuality as sacred and life-giving.

Sarah Gillen MA, LMFT, PCC is a Parent Coach, credentialed through the International Coach Federation, and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 30 years of experience. Sarah is writing a new book proposing child developmental phase called peri-adolescence. Her work with families, and her own experience, has highlighted the need for parents to address the ages of eight to eleven differently now, as a result of changes in many culture, environment, and biology on accelerated development and the clash between those and the normal neurological and hormonal activity occurring.

Sarah is also an intuitive healer who has developed a protocol for releasing the effects of painful and disruptive physical and emotional events through the energy system in the body. Due to her unique perceptual abilities, Sarah has discovered solutions for seemingly intractable childhood problems such as abandonment terror, sleep and eating disorders in very young children, and hypersensitivity issues, that often come from medical events at birth as well as other traumas.

I am interested in coaching parents/caregivers in raising healthy, positive mixed-race children through understanding, for example, the complexity or raising a mixed-race child, the current multiracial environment, and supporting the child in developing a healthy racial identity.

I also coach grant writers and others who want to improve their lives in some way ( e.g., wanting more free time, more money, better relationships, etc.).

I have twenty-five plus years as a psychologist serving seriously mentally ill adults, Seriously Emotionally Distrubed (SED) children and their families, and biracial adolescents and young adults.
